‘The Book Thief’ Main Characters and Simple Summary (Light Spoilers)

Summary

The Book Thief, by Marcus Zusak, is a tragic tale set in the fictional town of Molching, Germany, during World War II. The novel is told from the perspective of Death, who tells the story of Liesel Meminger. It begins with Liesel going to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann, due to separation from her mother. Liesel is still suffering from both the separation and the death of her brother. She begins to grow very close to the Hubermanns.

During this time, she becomes very good friends with Rudy Steiner. Over time, she starts to become very comfortable in the small town of Molching, becoming close to many of its residents. Soon after moving to Molching, Liesel notices the greatly increased Nazi presence in the town. They began to burn all enemy propaganda in the town, including books. Liesel dares to sneak a book from the fire, and begins to realize a simple truth; Hitler was responsible for her brother’s death, and she begins to hate him for it.

Main Characters

Death- the narrator of the novel, who at times is more human than any person could ever be. 

Liesel Meminger- the hardworking, book-thieving, kind-hearted protagonist of the novel. After moving to live with her foster parents, she begins to oppose the Nazi regime, especially after meeting Max Vandenburg.

Rudy Steiner- Liesel’s sunshine-haired partner in crime, who idolizes Jessie Owens, resents the Nazi regime and is in love with Liesel. He goes on to become a remarkable athlete and an incredibly smart student.

Max Vandenburg- the Jewish fist-fighter with a heart of gold who goes to hide in the Hubermann’s household. While there he becomes incredibly close to Liesel, whom he writes two books for. He eventually is forced to leave their house due to

Hans Hubbermann- Liesel’s loving foster father, who while not very outspoken, is a humble hero. He teaches Liesel how to read, and supports her rebellion against the Nazis. He hides Max in his basement to protect him and is known for his talent playing the accordion.

Rosa Hubermann- Liesel’s at times harsh but caring foster mother. She has a deep hatred for the Nazi regime and supports hiding Max in their basement with a passion. It is revealed her cruel demeanor is caused by the harsh world they live in and is actually incredibly kind.
