Short Stories Analysis : Part I

Introduction

In a reality ruled by both order and chaos, what drives human beings? What does this human drive mean in the greater context of both our society and the universe? We are inherently hopeful beings, set upon a goal of a better tomorrow. We stumble and fall, and yet we each individually fight on all the same.

Our separate lives are all more connected than we know, both between each of us human beings and with the societies and world we inhabit. Mankind, both in itself and in regard to the wider universe, is impossible to comprehend. And it is through this confusion, in the midst of the overwhelming nature of reality, that we seek purpose.

We all want our lives to have a greater purpose, whether it be great accomplishments in achievement, love, moral character, or countless other avenues of human expression. And perhaps many humans’ greatest fear is achieving nothing in the short lives we are given.

We all fear death, just as we fear any inevitable aspect of the universe. We are all fated to die, and it is this fleeting aspect of life that instills within us a great need for purpose. We want to truly live the time we are given, and not float through our lives with nothing to say or do. We embrace fate, just as we fight to control it.

The short stories through these three units are exemplary displays of human character, what drives all of us individually. The characters within these short stories are representative of greater human society, and the ways in which we all strive to create lives that instill within us a feeling of fulfillment.

We are fundamentally flawed beings, often blinded by our own hubris. And yet I believe there is something remarkable about how we find purpose in a life that so often is so merciless to us. It is human nature to endure, and it is in times of great tragedy that we often thrive and reach new heights.

We struggle onward despite the onslaught and have always wielded the ability to rise from the ashes stronger than ever. Human ambition knows no bounds, and it is this innate ambition that drives us onward. Whether fate is controlled by our actions or the world around us, in the end, it does not matter.

What matters is the human fight onward, the continual betterment of society over time. Chaos breeds change, and change is integral to our human DNA. We crave the new, never content with what has been achieved. And as the characters in many of these short stories show, the cliche indomitable human spirit is part of us all.
